|| MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS ||
FOR AGES 10 AND 11
POINTS TO REMEMBER :
Just as the multiplication of whole numbers, the multiplication of fractions is important in math. It helps to divide fractions, add fractions, and other things.
Fractions have numerator and denominator.
* Do not cross - multiply fractions.
** Just like simple multiplication of whole numbers and decimals, you can multiply more than two fractions together in one problem.
*** When multiplying fractions, multiply the numerators by the numerators and the denominators by the denominators.
Then reduce the product to its simplest form.
For Example:
1. Problem: 3 x 10
5 12
Solution:
First, multiply the numerator by the numerator.
3 x 10 = 30
And, multiply the denominator by the denominator.
5 x 12 = 60
Next, find the GCF of the numerator and denominator of the product.
GCF(30, 60) = 30
Then, divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF.
30 / 30 = 1
60 / 30 = 2
The answer is 1/2.
2. Problem: 1 3 4 12
-- x -- x -- = ---
3 4 5 60
Solution:
First, multiply the numerator by the numerator.
1 x 3 x 4 = 12
And, multiply the denominator by the denominator.
3 x 4 x 5 = 60
Next, find the GCF of the numerator and denominator of the product.
GCF(12, 60) = 12
Then, divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF.
12 / 12 = 1
60 / 12 = 5
The answer is 1/5.
