|| PRE-ALGEBRA ||

|| DIVISION OF FRACTIONS ||

FOR AGES 10 AND 11

POINTS TO REMEMBER :

If you know multiplication, you know division. Because division is nothing but cross multiplication.In multiplication you can multiply more than two fractions together, but in division you you can only divide 1 fraction by 1 fraction at a time.

Remember, fractions have numerator and denominator.

* Cross multiplication is involved in the division of fractions.

** Out of the two fractions being multiplied at a time, flip over the second fraction upside down so that denominator becomes numerator and numerator becomes denominator. Then multiply them.

In other words, when dividing fractions, multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fracrion and the denominator of the first fraction with the numerator of the second fraction..

**** In division of fraction, a whole number can be written as a fraction.

For example:

5 = 5 / 1.

*** In division of fractions, there can be more than two fractions. But unlike multiplication, you can only divide one fraction by one fraction at a time.

1   3   2   1   4   2   4   2   4   5   20   5
-- / -- / -- = -- x -- / -- = -- / -- = -- x -- = -- = --
2   4   5   2   3   5   6   5   6   2   12   3

***** Do not forget to reduce the product to its simplest form.

Example:

    Problem:

3   5
-- / --
4   6

    Solution:

    First, flip over the second fraction. Then, multiply both the fractions.

3   6
-- x --
4   5

     Multiply the numerator by the numerator.

3  x  6 = 18

     And, multiply the denominator by the denominator.

4  x  5  =  20

    Next, find the GCF of the numerator and denominator of the product.

                   GCF(18, 20) = 2

    Then, divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF.

18 / 2

------

20 / 2

  9
= ---
  10

     The answer is 9/10.
