|| PRE-ALGEBRA ||

|| GREATEST COMMON FACTOR ||

FOR AGES 10 AND 11

POINTS TO REMEMBER :

There are more than one factors of a number. For two or more numbers there can be many Common Factors. You have to chose the largest or greatest of them which is very useful in dealing with fractions. For convinence the Greatest Common Factor - GCF, is used throught the math.

* When finding a GCF, use only whole numbers.

** Be aware of all the numbers you are finding a GCF for.

Example:

Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

The factors of 18 are: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18..

The factors of 24 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.

The common factors of both 18 and 24 are: 1, 2, 3, and 6.

The smallest common factor for both is 1 and the largest or greatest common factor for both 18 1nd 24 is 6. The greatest is immportant, since smallest will always be 1.

Thus, the GCF of 18 and 24 is 6.
