INFORMATION - WHALES - 1

Dear friends:

What do you think whales are?

Are they fish?

No.

Whales look like fish, but they are not fish.

They are mammals.

What are mammals?

Mammals are warm-blooded animals. Unlike fish they breathe air. They do not lay eggs, instead they give birth to babies. Mammals nurse their babies with milk. Fish do not nurse their babies with milk.

Like fish whales live in the water. They have fins.

Can you tell the difference between whales and fish by looking at the fins?

Sure, you can.

Whales have horizontal tail fins. They are from side to side like wings of an airplane.

Fish have vertical tail fins. They are up and down.

Whales are amazing animals!
