Cubic Measurement

Volume and Capacity

Cubic measure:

Line as one dimension gives you length or distance.

When you add more lines connecting to each other and making some geometric figure on the same surface it gives you area. Because you added second dimension.

Now, if you add depth to the same figure you are adding a third dimension.

When you add third dimension it gives you a new measure - volume.

Thus, three dimensional figure has length, width or height and depth. It occupies a space. It covers volume.

Let us see some three dimensional figures.

Cube has 6 sides of equal length and width.
Cube    Volume of a cube = a x a x a = a³

A prism has two parallel bases and three or more sides.
Rectangular prism   Volume

= a x b x c

A cylinder has flat circular ends and sides shaped like the outside of a tube.
Cylinder   Volume = b x h = pi x r² x h

A pyramid has a polygon as a base and triangular sides that meet at a point on top.
Pyramid   volume = 1/3 x b x h, where b = area of the base

A cone has a round base and a point at the top.
Cone   volume = 1/3 x b x h = 1/3 x pi x r² x h

A sphere is like a ball or globe with all points of the shape at the same distance from the center.
Sphere   volume = 4/3 x pi x r³

An oval shape.
Ellipsoid   volume = 4/3 x pi x r1 x r2 x r3

Table of Cubic Measure

1728 cubic inches = 1cubic foot

27 cubic feet = 1cubic yard

128 cubic feet = 1cord of wood

24 3/4 cubic feet = 1perch of stone

A cord of wood is a pile 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high.

A perch of stone or brick is 16 1/2 feet long, 1 1/2 feet wide and 1 foot high.

Table of Liquid Measure

3 teaspoons (tsp.) = 1 tablespoon (tbsp.)

2 tablespoon = 1 fluid ounce

16 tablespoons = 8 fluid ounces (fl.oz.)

8 fluid ounces (fl.oz.) = 1 cup

2 cups = 1 pint (pt.)

4 gills (gi.)  = 1 pint (pt.)

2 pints = 1 quart (qt.)

4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal.)

31 1/2 gallons = 1 barrel (bbl.)

2 barrels = hogshead (hhd.)

Table of Dry Measure

2 pints (pt.) = 1 quart (qt.)

8 quarts = 1 peck (pk.)

4 pecks = 1 bushel (bu.)

1 cord = 128 cu. ft.
