Math - A GAME OF NUMBERS, LETTERS, AND POSITIONS

PART - 1 - NUMBERS

 Dear Friend:

Do you know that there are ten basic symbols or characters for the numbers?  They are from 0 to 9. 

These ten basic numbers are: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Other numbers are combinations of these ten basic numbers.

For example, the number 10 is a combination of 1 and 0.

Do you know how you arrive at 10?

Let us start with zero-0, first. Number zero is the first basic number. Zero means nothing. If you have 0 money means you have no money. But if someone gives you a dollar you now have one dollar. In other words, when you add one to zero it becomes one. It is a simple addition. One is represented by symbol or character 1. 

Except zero, one is the lowest number.

Now, when you add 1 to 1 it becomes two. For example, if you have one apple and if someone gives you one more apple how many apples will you have? The answer is two. Number two is represented by the symbol or character 2.

Now add 1 to 2. It makes three. Which is represented by symbol or character 3.

Same way 3+1 is equal to four. How you are going to write four? By the symbol or character 4.

4+1= five, represented by symbol or character 5.

5+1= six, represented by symbol or character 6.

6+1= seven, represented by symbol or character 7.

7+1=eight, represented by symbol or character 8.

8+1= nine, represented by symbol or character 9. 

Our forefathers, our great-great-great-grandfathers gave these symbols or characters which still we are using now. Different language has different characters but the basic is same.

Now what is 9+1? Nine plus one is ten. (9+1= Ten.) We do not have symbol for ten. I think our forefathers have stopped there. They did not gave any new symbol for ten. Anyway, how many more new symbols you are going to remember? They were wise. So they used previous symbols to represent ten. They combined two symbols, 1 and 0, together to make one symbol for ten -10.

Now, add 1 to 10.

 

     10  
  +  1  
     

We now know that 0+1 = 1.

     0  
  + 1  
  = 1  

 So 10+1=11. 

    10  
  +  1  
  =11  

Now, we got the symbol for eleven. It is 11.

This is how you add on and on to arrive at the new symbols to represent different numbers or figures.

The numbers you are playing with are the same numbers a college student also plays with, and a scientist also plays with. In all, we have only ten basic characters or symbols for the numbers.
